Comet Neowise in the High Desert

Comet Neowise Setup

Discovered on March 27, 2020 by NASA’s Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) mission, Comet Neowise (C/2020 F3) put on a dazzling display for skywatchers before it disappeared, not to be seen again for another 6,800 years.

The comet swept through our fair planet’s northern skies, coming closest to Earth on July 23, 2020. My images were recorded on the night of July 23, 2020 in the high desert of Central Oregon, overlooking the mountain landscape atop Paulina Peak. The sunset was absolutely stunning as it lent itself to a misty evening hue before the stars took on full display. The crescent moon began to set around 10:46 pm, lending me a sky with no moon. With the milky way rising behind me, the sun and moon setting in front of me, the big dipper, and the remnants of the Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower ushered Comet Neowise to the stage in such an awesome display.

Shooting April’s Super Pink Moon

April’s Pink Moon set up

April 2020, traveling to the east side of the Cascades in search of the Super Pink Moon rising and setting involves staying up late and getting up super early! The moonrise was absolutely spectacular as it seemed to rise out of the haze hovering over the hillside and straight up into the air with a lovely pinkish hue captured by the lenses. The next morning (getting up around 4am), I found the moon setting over an empty house and field of cattle, setting up in front of the door of the house, I watched the moon disappear in the distance right through the front door!

Shooting the Wolf Moon over Crater Lake

Wolf Moon Set up!

January 1, 2018, a crisp 38 degrees and low snowfall, afforded us to drive to Rim Village which is an oddity this time of year in anticipation of the first full super moon of the year, the Super Wolf Moon. Barely getting to the village in time, we traversed to the west in the snow with boots, cameras and tripods. There was a small cloud layer as the sun began to set and the mountain began to glow. An incredible sight to see, I captured the event with two camera bodies. On the way down the mountain, it was then that I received the phone call that my father had suffered a massive heart attack. It is in my father’s memory that I dedicate these moments to live on beyond my years. He will never be forgotten. I love you Dad.
